Perhaps you&#8217;d like to see our growing list of amazing <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bowdish.ca\/lab\/people\/alumni\/\">Alumni<\/a>?<\/h2>\n<h2><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">Graduate Students:<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><strong>Sofya Ermolina<\/strong> (PhD student, 2021-) did her undergraduate degree at Brock<img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignright size-thumbnail wp-image-3199\" src=\"https:\/\/www.bowdish.ca\/lab\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/09\/20190424_145116-150x150.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"150\" height=\"150\" \/> University and worked as a technician in McMaster&#8217;s CAF. She brings that wealth of skills to our team that will be essential to uncover the role of the microbiome and inflammation in healthy and unhealthy aging. She&#8217;ll be working primarily in the <a href=\"http:\/\/psal.ca\/\">PreClinical Studies in Aging Lab<\/a> to find new avenues of intervention to improve the aging trajectory.\u00a0<em>Distinctions: CIHR funded scholarship to attend the Summer Program on Aging<\/em><em>. M.Smith CGS Travel Award 2026.\u00a0 Medical Sciences Graduate Program Travel Award. 2026<\/em><\/p>\n<p><strong>Eman Ranne<\/strong> (MSc student, September 2024-ongoing) completed his BSc at the University<img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignright size-thumbnail wp-image-3591\" src=\"https:\/\/www.bowdish.ca\/lab\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/12\/Eman-Ranne-150x150.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"150\" height=\"150\" \/> of Toronto, Scarborough. He joined the Bowdish lab to uncover why older adults who have serious respiratory infections can have long-lasting health issues, including cognitive decline. He aims to discover new treatments to help people recover from infections and continue living their best lives for as long as possible. <strong>Distinctions: <\/strong><em>Ontario Graduate Scholarship (OGS) 2025\/26<\/em><\/p>\n<p><strong><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignleft size-thumbnail wp-image-3590\" src=\"https:\/\/www.bowdish.ca\/lab\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/12\/Hesam-2024-150x150.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"150\" height=\"150\" \/>Hesam Hafezalseheh<\/strong> (PhD candidate, 2024- ongoing) obtained his MSc in Biostatistics at the Universit\u00e9 Laval. He is co-supervised by <a href=\"https:\/\/hsnsudbury.ca\/en\/Research\/Strategic-Plan-Leads\/Chris-Verschoor-PhD\">Dr. Chris Verschoor<\/a> and Dr. Bowdish and brings his unique analytical skill set to answering the important question of why and how some of us age well, and some age poorly. Using large datasets such as the Canadian Longitudinal Study on Aging he is investigating which biomarkers are associated with accelerated or delayed aging, frailty and poor health outcomes, including post-pneumonia cognitive decline.<strong> Distinctions:<\/strong> <em>MIRA Graduate Student Professional Development Award to attend the Canadian Association on Gerontology annual meeting (2026).\u00a0<\/em><\/p>\n<p><strong>Olivia Povey<\/strong> (MSc candidate, 2025-ongoing) completed her BSc at McGill University<img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignright wp-image-3711 size-thumbnail\" src=\"https:\/\/www.bowdish.ca\/lab\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/11\/Photo-150x150.jpeg\" alt=\"\" width=\"150\" height=\"150\" \/> where she did her honours thesis project studying influenza vaccination and infection with Dr. Brian Ward. She brings her expertise to studies of protective immune responses differ between young and older adults. Specifically, she is studying how non-neutralizing antibodies to COVID-19 vaccinations might protect from infections in older and frail adults.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Eaint Thet Su<\/strong> (MSc candidate, 2025-ongoing) did her BSc at Carnegie Mellon University (Qatar). She brings her extensive cell and molecular biology experience to studies of how the aging gut microbiota contributes to healthy and unhealthy aging. She investigates how the aging gut and the aging immune system communicate to keep our microbes at bay and what happens when that communication breaks down.<\/p>\n<p><strong>DeAnna Meacher<\/strong> (MSc candidate, 2025-ongoing), a McMaster Biology graduate and is co-supervised by <a href=\"https:\/\/hsnsudbury.ca\/en\/Research\/Strategic-Plan-Leads\/Chris-Verschoor-PhD\">Dr. Chris Verschoor<\/a> and Dr. Bowdish. She studies how age, frailty, medications, and chronic inflammation alter immune responses to vaccination and infection.<\/p>\n<p><strong><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">Lab Manager &amp; Manager of the PreClinical Studies in Aging Lab<\/span>:<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>Erica de Jong<\/strong> (MSc, 2018-2020) did her MSc entitled &#8220;Unhealthy Aging and the<img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-thumbnail wp-image-2761 alignright\" src=\"https:\/\/www.bowdish.ca\/lab\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/02\/IMG_20181109_134049-150x150.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"150\" height=\"150\" \/> microbiota&#8221; in the Bowdish lab. She is helping us uncover how the microbes that live in and on us conspire against us as we grow older, manages our biobank and industrial and academic collaborations. She is also the lead scientist in the<a href=\"http:\/\/psal.ca\/index.php\"> PreClinical Studies in Aging Lab<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/scholar.google.ca\/citations?user=wCcyRZ8AAAAJ&amp;hl=en&amp;oi=ao\">collaborates extensively<\/a> with researchers in Europe and North America. <strong>Distinctions:<\/strong><em> Ontario Graduate Scholarship (2019\/2020). Certificate of Excellence from the Summer Program in Aging, CIHR (2019).<\/em><\/p>\n<h2><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">Post-doctoral fellows<\/span>:<\/h2>\n<p><strong>Dr. K\u00e9my Ad\u00e9<\/strong> (PDF 2023-ongoing) completed her PhD at the <a href=\"https:\/\/research.pasteur.fr\/en\/team\/macrophages-and-endothelial-cells\/\">Institut Pasteur<\/a> where<img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignright wp-image-3471 size-thumbnail\" src=\"https:\/\/www.bowdish.ca\/lab\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/03\/Kemy-Ade-150x150.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"150\" height=\"150\" \/> she studied how the aging microenvironment impacted tissue resident macrophages. She is studying how aging and frailty impacts lung macrophage numbers, types, and function, with the aim of understanding how these changes increase the risk of pneumonia and lung disease. <strong>Distinctions<\/strong>: <em>McCall MacBain Postdoctoral Leadership program 2024<\/em><\/p>\n<p><strong><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignleft wp-image-3707 size-thumbnail\" src=\"https:\/\/www.bowdish.ca\/lab\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/11\/Lab-Photo_Ferris-e1762049333178-150x150.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"150\" height=\"150\" \/>Dr. Ferris Munyonho<\/strong> (PDF 2025-ongoing) received a prestigious Fulbright scholarship for his PhD studies in Biomedical Sciences at Tulane University where he developed novel methodologies for studying <em>Pneumocystis\u00a0<\/em>infections. He received his MSc from Zhejiang University of Science &amp; Technology and has worked as a research scientist at the University of Zimbabwe. He brings his extensive experience in infectious disease in vulnerable populations to studies of COVID-19 infections and vaccinations in vulnerable and older adults. <strong>Distinctions<\/strong>: <em>D2R Post-doctoral fellowship 2026-2028.\u00a0<\/em><\/p>\n<p><b><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">Research Coordinators &amp; Technical Staff<\/span>:<\/b><\/p>\n<p><strong><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignleft size-thumbnail wp-image-3467\" src=\"https:\/\/www.bowdish.ca\/lab\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/03\/Screenshot_20231010_135915_Instagram-150x150.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"150\" height=\"150\" \/>Braeden Cowborough <\/strong>(2019 &#8211; ) got an MSc from the McMaster Immunology Research Centre with Dr. Matt Miller in 2017. After working briefly in industry he joined the Bowdish team. Braeden&#8217;s portfolio is extensive, he is leading our labs serological studies of antibody responses to SARS-CoV-2 infections and vaccinations.<\/p>\n<p><strong><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">Undergraduates<\/span><\/strong><span style=\"color: #000000; font-weight: bold;\">:<\/span><\/p>\n<p><strong><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignleft size-thumbnail wp-image-3710\" src=\"https:\/\/www.bowdish.ca\/lab\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/11\/Image-1-150x150.jpeg\" alt=\"\" width=\"150\" height=\"150\" \/>Isabela G.G. Viana<\/strong> (2024 Summer student, 2024-25 3rd year Honours Biochemistry project student) studies how antibody isotypes (IgG1\/2\/3\/4) made in response to SARS-CoV-2 vaccination protect from infection. Perhaps having the initials IgG made this project her destiny? She also runs the lab&#8217;s <a href=\"https:\/\/www.tiktok.com\/@housemacrophage_?_t=ZS-8zaldawASAR&amp;_r=1\">TikTok account<\/a> and our trainee led vaccination promotion campaign &#8216;Protect your herd&#8217;.<strong> Distinctions<\/strong>: <em>Winner for best undergraduate poster presentation, Infection &amp; Immunity Forum (IIRF) 2025<\/em><\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignright size-thumbnail wp-image-3708\" src=\"https:\/\/www.bowdish.ca\/lab\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/11\/Image-3-e1762051473657-150x150.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"150\" height=\"150\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.bowdish.ca\/lab\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/11\/Image-3-e1762051473657-150x150.jpg 150w, https:\/\/www.bowdish.ca\/lab\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/11\/Image-3-e1762051473657-450x448.jpg 450w, https:\/\/www.bowdish.ca\/lab\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/11\/Image-3-e1762051473657-301x300.jpg 301w, https:\/\/www.bowdish.ca\/lab\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/11\/Image-3-e1762051473657.jpg 530w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 150px) 100vw, 150px\" \/><\/p>\n<p><strong>Shuo Fang<\/strong> (2024-25 4th year Chemical Biology thesis student) has extensive research experience in her many co-op projects and brings her passion for understanding the mechanisms of aging to the Bowdish lab. She studies the long-term health effects of pneumonia in order to develop new treatments to improve the lives of older adults.<\/p>\n<p><strong style=\"color: #000000;\">Fearless leader<\/strong><span style=\"color: #000000; font-weight: bold;\">:\u00a0<\/span><strong><a href=\"mailto:bowdish@mcmaster.ca\">Dawn<\/a>&#8216;s<\/strong>\u00a0project is &#8211; in theory &#8211; pushing back the\u00a0boundaries of\u00a0<span style=\"color: #333333; font-style: normal; line-height: 24px;\">macrophage biology.\u00a0<\/span><span style=\"color: #333333; font-style: normal; line-height: 24px;\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.bowdish.ca\/lab\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/10\/Dawn-feeding-data-wall-sm.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignright size-thumbnail wp-image-1237\" src=\"https:\/\/www.bowdish.ca\/lab\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/10\/Dawn-feeding-data-wall-sm-150x150.jpg\" alt=\"Dawn-feeding-data-wall-sm\" width=\"150\" height=\"150\" \/><\/a>In practice she spends a lot of time writing\u00a0grants,<\/span><span style=\"color: #333333; font-style: normal; line-height: 24px;\">\u00a0writing more grants, filling out interminable paperwork, and basically keeping all those macrophage shaped balls in the air. She is pictured here doing what she loves best &#8211; keeping the data gods fed and happy with exciting new discoveries.
